How to update Internet Explorer

Last updated: October 22, 2017

Internet Explorer (IE) is the default web browser application installed on Windows devices that do not run Windows 10. The latest version of Internet Explorer depends upon which Windows operating system you are using. If you are running Windows 7 or 8.x, the latest version is IE 11. For Vista users, the newest version is IE 9. Those running Windows XP will have IE 8 as the latest available version. Upon the release of Windows 10, Internet Explorer will be replaced with the Microsoft Edge web browser.

For the security and stability of your system, it is a good practice to be certain your web browser is up to date. You may update Internet Explorer to ensure you are running the latest version via Windows Update. But before starting, you may first wish to consider exiting out of any programs that may be running on your computer.

Windows Update

Windows 7 users click the Start button, choose All Programs directly above the Search input field, and click Windows Update. Click the Check for updates link.

Windows 8 users click the Search icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Start screen, input Windows Update, and click Check for updates in the search results.

Windows will inform you if updates are available to download and install. Keep in mind that Windows Update will check for available updates for all Microsoft programs installed on your Windows computer, not just Internet Explorer. As such, you may see more than one updates listed as being available. Click the Install updates button to begin the download and installation process.

Once the updates have been installed, you may be prompted to restart your computer. If presented with this option, consider restarting your computer right away rather than choosing to restart it later. This will allow the updates to take effect immediately.
