Mozilla introduced the option to block website notification requests in Firefox 59. Not all websites issue notifications. For those that do, Firefox asks users for permission to allow a website’s notification during a visit. Users also have the choice to disregard the notifications for now, or to never allow them on a subsequent visit. This tutorial shows you how to block website notification requests in Firefox when prompted, and how to manage those permissions.
When a website wants to send persistent notifications to a user, Firefox displays a notification icon in the address bar. A permission prompt also displays. The prompt asks if you want to allow notifications or not (or to never allow them again).
If you click Allow Notifications, you add the site to Firefox’s Notification Permissions Settings with an Allowed status. Click the pull-down arrow to choose Never Allow and add the site to Notification Permissions with a Blocked status. Choose Not Now to ignore the prompt this time around.
Notification Permissions Settings
To manage notification permissions, click the Open menu button, and choose Options.
In the left navigation, click Privacy & Security, or visit
about:preferences#privacy in your address bar. Scroll down to the Permissions section and locate Notifications.
Press the Settings button to launch the Settings – Notification Permissions window. You will find the websites listed there with an allowed or blocked status. Use the pull-down menu under Status for each site to toggle between Allow or Block if you want to change a website’s status. Don’t forget to click the Save Changes button to save your changes when you’re done.
To remove a website from the list so its notifications are no longer allowed or blocked, highlight the site, and click the Remove Website button. Or click the Remove All Websites button to delete the entire list, then click the Save Changes button.
Users can also clear a blocked website by clicking the notification icon in the address bar, then clicking the X icon.
Download the latest version of Firefox Quantum from the Mozilla website.
