Watch the Video: How to disable Windows 10 location service
Windows 10 has a location service used by some Windows and third-party apps to determine your geographic location. The location service delivers location-based content to your computer or device. Such content includes maps, directions, and Cortana, in addition to finding useful service locations like gas stations and restaurants in your vicinity. The default setting for location service is On.
Many reasons exist why you may not want to allow Windows and third-party apps to use your current location. Those reasons could include privacy concerns and battery drain. No matter your reason, there are multiple ways to disable Windows 10 location service.
Disable Windows 10 Location Service in Settings
To disable Windows 10 location service on your desktop or laptop computer, click the Start button, and click Settings.
In Settings, click Privacy (Location, camera).
In Privacy settings, click Location in the left navigation. Under the Location section, click the Change button. Click the On button to toggle it Off.
It is important to note that the Change button is only present when viewing Settings while logged in as an administrator. If logged in under a non-administrator user account, the option to toggle location service On and Off is still present.
HINT: The option to toggle Location On may appear grayed out. This may be due to the administrator of your computer disabling Location service on the administrator level.
In this case, log into Windows 10 using an administrator user account, go to Settings > Privacy > Location, click the Change button, and turn Location On. Once you turn Location on, the Location toggle will no longer display as grayed out.
Disable Windows 10 Location Service in Action Center
You can also disable location service in the Windows 10 Action Center. To launch Action Center, click the Action Center icon in the task bar, or press and hold the Windows key on your keyboard, and press the “A” key. Click the Location icon to disable location service.
Just as a regular user may have found in the Settings panel, the Location icon may also appear grayed out in the Action Center. If so, an administrator has turned off this feature on the administrator level. For more information, visit Windows 10 location and privacy FAQ.
